Because text is the most likely source for keywords on your page, the page’s text content is very important. Pages without text can be seen by Search Engines as virtually empty, so a good balance is needed between page text and other media.

Text in images is invisible to Search Engines. Off-topic text can lead Search Engines to think that your website presents little value or relevance.


Ever heard the expression in SEO circles that says “Content is King”? Well, this is more true now than ever before. If your competition for page 1 ranking has 5 pages of really great content, well, just write 8 pages of really great content yourself. If your ranked competitor has 10 pages of great content, you should write 15. And so on. While all the other SEO techniques mentioned in this website are valid and help in the big picture, this is probably the number 1 SEO tip we can give you. But, what about text content will make it really great? That’s where we come in.

I’m hoping this one doesn’t need too much explanation.

Most websites allow you to create and upload page content, which itself can consist of text, images, videos etc. The important thing here is that the page content you do upload is on-topic, and preferably uses keywords that you discovered from Step 1.

If you have several keywords, choose which words are going to be appropriate for particular pages. If you have words that are specific for one service for example, then use the right keywords for that page on that page, several times, say 3-5 maybe. It has to read well too, so don’t just plonk the words somewhere on the page. Weave them into the text you are writing, so that it all makes sense. If you page is on-topic anyway, then this shouldn’t be too hard at all.


So long as your texts stay strictly on-topic, and your web page is a pleasure to read, then write away! 100+ words per page is minimum, 300+ is ideal, 1000+ is amazing. However don’t make it one great block that no-one can be bothered reading.

It’s important to acknowledge to yourself if you’re not so great at writing for publication. If that’s the case, get a professional copywriter to help out.

Things to Note

Search engines like Google start indexing page content from the top down, so the part of your page that would be in view when your page first loads on the “average” sized screen is really important. This means, wherever possible, put some indexable texts with keywords in the top section of your page. That doesn’t mean a big block of daunting text though! Probably 100-300 words is plenty for the average page, although more is fine (and may even be better), less is not so good. The absence of text is a big negative for SEO.

There should be only one occurrence of H1 title text on your page. Other titles or subheadings should be set out in hierarchy, i.e. One H1, then sub level heading H2, then sublevels to that are H3 etc. The bulk of your text should probably be in tag (paragraph). Where possible, use a font that is read easily. Probably 14pt is best. 12pt is a bit small. Think of your target market here as well. Some people find it difficult to read 14pt or smaller.

Watch out for text you are copying and pasting from elsewhere. There are several warnings about this:

  1. Don’t plagiarise others’ work. It’s seen negatively by search engines and also may land you in legal trouble. If you have permission to use someone else’s ideas, make sure you change at least 1/8 of the text value to your own words. This helps it appear as being unique and avoids duplication issues. By the way, 1/8 means 1/8 of every paragraph on average, not just the last 1/8th of the whole text.
  2. Text you are getting from printed material may not be suitable for web. In other words, it’s probably not SEO text, print text doesn’t need SEO, so texts you get from print media are seldom ever optimal for use on the web. You should talk to an SEO consltant if you want to use existing texts.
  3. Text you copy from digital sources like Word files for example contain formatting markup, i.e. they use code to format the page that you can’t see and don’t realise your have copied. This can damage or even destroy the formatting of the web page when pasted into the website. I suggest “cleansing” the text via a RTE like “Notepad” first. It will remove all the markup and formatting.
